LEARN THE PROS AND CONS OF AUBURN UNIVERSITY HOUSING
by Auburn Student and Collegiate Hotel Intern, Abbey Crank
Congrats on joining the Auburn Family! Now you are looking for the best student housing options while studying at Auburn University. Whether you are considering one of Auburn University’s on-campus housing options or searching for off campus housing, below is a student’s perspective on things to consider when making your choice.
ON-CAMPUS HOUSING AT AUBURN UNIVERSITY
Dorm living sound intriguing? There are many benefits to living on-campus at Auburn University. With three primary housing areas on-campus, you can live smack dab in the middle of the action:
- Classes are close! You’ll be able to sleep in comfortably knowing it’ll only take 10 minutes to get to your 8 a.m. lecture.
- Community is HUGE, especially if you’re an incoming freshman. Living in the dorms opens up many opportunities to meet people.
- Rushing a sorority? Auburn does not have sorority houses. Instead, each sorority has their own specific dorm within The Village housing area. Rush happens before school starts, so getting to rush parties and meeting new friends is so much easier when you live on campus.
- Food hubs are all around campus. From Chick-fil-A to the Edge Dining Hall, there will always be something steps away from your dorm room.
INTERN INSIGHT: If you’re a freshman, be sure to add the Grubhub app where you can attach your Tiger Dining dollars and order food ahead. When you only have 15 minutes in between classes, this will be a lifesaver.
- Walking is definitely a perk of on-campus housing. Events are happening constantly on campus and coming in from off campus and finding parking spots can be tough.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING
While there are many advantages to on-campus housing, living off campus also has its perks:
- You’ll have a kitchen! Most dorms have limited cooking options, and it may get old eating out every day. Having my own space to cook my own meals was a game-changer.
- Adulting. Is. Real. Having your own place outside of Auburn’s campus makes you learn responsibility and independence; cleaning an entire apartment and grocery shopping definitely makes you more organized.
- Depending on the option you choose, it can be less expensive than living on-campus.
INTERN INSIGHT: Roommates help cut the cost. Some people love to be social and have friends over; others want their home to be completely silent. Try and find people who fit your vibe!
- Most off-campus options are near the Auburn University student shuttle service, Tiger Transit.
INTERN INSIGHT: During the fall and spring semesters, Tiger Transit buses usually run from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. To make sure you don’t miss your bus, download the DoubleMap app to see every bus’s location. For more information, head over to Tiger Transit’s webpage.
- Many off-campus housing options are still close to campus and downtown Auburn. You can still be in walking distance from class!
- Amenities are endless. Many off campus options in Auburn offer pools, gyms, and study hubs for students to use.
